Benedictus, Edouard
1879-1930

This talented graphic artist worked in Paris and achieved his greatest success in the watershed
years following World War I. He established himself as a painter, a bookbinder, and an outstanding
designer of textile and wallpaper patterns.

Benedictus' designs were intended to inspire manufacturers of fabric and wallpaper rather than to be
end products in themselves. He specialized in designs for the use of artificial silk by the firm of
Brunet, Meunie et Cie.

Benedictus' pochoir colored albums of exciting motifs reflect the Art Deco aesthetic at its finest.
His designs capitalized on the geometry of the style, effectively incorporating the Cubist art
movement into the decorative arts.
